All About Vinyl: Learn about the difference and options available for Adhesive Vinyl & HTV

There are a lot of vinyl options on the market. So we thought it was a good time to give you the 411 on Vinyl so that you know your options and to eliminate any confusion that you may have.

Get the vinyl 411 with this all about vinyl article from the experts at Pro World

There are two main categories of  Vinyl – Adhesive Vinyl & Heat Transfer Vinyl.

Adhesive Vinyl is used as a decorative vinyl for creating signs or craft projects. It has an adhesive back and can be applied to just about any hard surface. Adhesive Vinyl comes in three different adhesive strengths – semi-permanent (631), permanent (651) and professional grade.

Heat Transfer Vinyl, which is also known as HTV is used for decorating garments and is applied with a heat press or an iron.

Vinyl Varieties

Here at Pro World we LOVE vinyl, and we carry a large assortment to ensure that our customers always get precisely what they want! Below are the different vinyl types that we carry:

Heat Transfer Vinyl (HTV)

Cutting Vinyl

cutting vinyl

For starters, to cut vinyl you will need a vinyl cutting machine, we sell vinyl cutters in multiple sizes. There are cutters for the hobbyist and for the professional custom seller. You can find all of our options here.

Cutting Adhesive Vinyl

When you cut adhesive vinyl you want to cut on the shiny, color. Not on the paper backing. And when you apply it you will want to weed your design and then apply your gridded application tape on top of the design. This will help you align your design on the surface.

vinyl and application tape

Cutting Heat Transfer Vinyl

With HTV you cut on the back side of the heat transfer vinyl, not the plastic top. Since you cut on the back of the HTV you need to mirror your design before cutting it. Then when you weed your design, you should lift the waste HTV away from the plastic sheet,  so that the plastic sheet stays intact covering your design. The plastic sheet will act as a protective barrier so that the HTV doesn’t directly touch the heat. Once we are done pressing you will remove the plastic sheet.

Now that you know the difference between adhesive vinyl & HTV tell me.. What do you want to try? Head to our website from now until Sunday 10/14/18 and you can get 10% OFF all vinyl & cutters! PLUS you will get 2x PW Reward Points! Which means it is a great time to stock up.

All About Pressing Pillows & Perfect Pads

Pressing Pillows vs. Perfect Pads. Do you know the difference?  While neither are absolutely necessary to use your heat press, once you’ve worked with them, you won’t know how you ever pressed without them!  Both will make getting your heat pressing jobs done a whole lot easier!

PRESSING PILLOWS (1)

Which one to use depends on the size of your design, and how smooth the area is that you are working with.

First let’s discuss the Pressing Pillow.  Made out of a Teflon covered foam, not only do the pillows protect your garments and fabrics from the harsh heating process, but they even out the area where you’d like to place your design.

Zippers, buttons, and seams all get in the way of creating a flat surface area on your garment. Without a Pressing Pillow, the top plate of the heat press may not get a tight seal on the actual heat transfer vinyl (HTV), causing a lack of pressure which may not allow the HTV to stick well to the surface of your garment. When you insert the pillow into the garment, these obstacles sink down into the pillow (for instance a zipper won’t press in causing printing issues) and eliminate the pressure points creating a smooth area.

IMG_5381

Pillows come in a four pack:

IMG_5386

  • 6×6 (we like using them for baby onesies).
  • 5×16 (great for sleeves and legs)
  • 10×10 (we like this size for tote bags)
  • 15×15 (great for adult garments, especially with a bunch of zippers and/or buttons)

While Pressing Pillows allow the zippers and seams to depress into the pillow, Perfect Pads raise the printing area to work around these elements. The Perfect Pad should be inserted directly under the area where the HTV will go, and not under any zippers, buttons, seams or anything creating an uneven surface.  Because the Perfect Pads maintain even pressure, they are also a great accessory for screen printed or digital transfers.  The pads are made out of rubber, like that on the bottom of the heat press.

Perfect Pads come in four different sizes and are sold individually:

IMG_5390

When you have a garment that you just can’t get around something, like buttons or seams, it’s best to go with a Pressing Pillow (such as a baby onesie with all of these thick seams).  The Perfect Pad is great though when you already have an even surface and are in need of a specific size to apply your design.

HTV vs Sublimation – What’s the difference?

When it comes to creating custom products, there are a number of different ways to do it. So how do you know which is right for you, your specific project, and your business overall? We’re going to help break it down for you. As you’ve seen from our Friday Facebook Live videos we love to create things and two of the main ways we make our designs is with heat transfer vinyl (HTV) and sublimation.

Heat Trans vs Sub-5_preview

With HTV you can create an endless supply of personalized shirts, bags, hats, aprons, etc. It is available in a number of different colors, sizes, and finishes, and you can use it alone or layer it for a more dimensional look.

htv

Sublimation is a great way to add a premium full-color, photographic quality image to your project, especially since it will not crack, peel, or wash away. When sublimation inks are heated to 400*F with a heat press, they turn into a gas and form a permanent bond to white or light colored polyester fabrics, or items with a polymer coating.

wedding coozie

HTV gives you more options when it comes to garments as it works on any color, unlike sublimation which can only be done on white or light colored fabrics. But if you are personalizing phone cases, mugs, frames, etc., sublimation is a more simplified process that gives you more options.

And while HTV and sublimation are each great in different ways and for different projects, they can also be used together. Want to sublimate on a dark colored garment? Create a design using HTV and then sublimate on top of it. Talk about one of a kind!
